Cast – Alright

Back in 1995, Cast reached number 13 in the charts with this, their second single in a pretty good run of chart hits. Indie guitar bands were the flavour of the day and the word Britpop was on everyone’s lips.

But Cast were formed out of the mess of Liverpool’s famous flagbearers, The La’s and as such, John Power had been making music for more than a dozen years. In fact this song was performed a handful of times with The La’s under it’s original title Fly On.

The La’s spent years struggling to capture their organic sound and eventually Power left and took the song with him. In Cast’s hands, it’s pacier and punchier, with beefed up guitars and a bigger, fuller sound.

Maybe the lads’ experience is the reason why this song sounds so good, maybe it was John Leckie at the controls, or maybe it was the opportunity to record an album without the endless, fruitless search for the ‘right sound’, which had tormented the La’s and eventually ended them.

Whatever it was, this song has the lovely, loud and proud sound of a band in their heyday and it’s a sound which helped Cast earn the sobriquet ‘The Who of the 90s‘.
